How to choose paint colours and wallpaper without feeling overwhelmed
Colour is one of the most powerful tools in interior design and one of the most intimidating.
Standing in front of a wall of paint charts can quickly lead to doubt. Everything looks different at home. The light changes. The samples feel confusing.
The first thing to understand is that colour never exists in isolation. It is influenced by light aspect flooring furniture and adjoining rooms.
This is why choosing a colour because it looked good online rarely works.
I always start with undertone. Warm or cool. This immediately narrows the options and creates harmony throughout the home. Northern light behaves very differently to west facing rooms and understanding this makes all the difference.
Next I consider how rooms connect. I prefer to think in terms of feature rooms not feature walls. Allowing colour to wrap and flow creates depth and cohesion rather than interruption.
Wallpaper works best when it is part of an overall scheme rather than a standalone statement. Pattern should feel balanced by quieter elements elsewhere in the room.
Most importantly trust how a space makes you feel rather than chasing perfection. A home should feel layered lived in and welcoming not overly styled.
If colour decisions feel overwhelming that usually means there is not yet a clear plan. With the right guidance the process becomes enjoyable and intuitive.
